Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from the aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash at the home of one on the jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
